Understanding the Two Streams
Domestic Systems (BS 5839-6)
Domestic fire alarm work covers homes, flats, and HMOs. Systems range from simple standalone detectors to fully integrated Grade A installations.
Commercial Systems (BS 5839-1)
Commercial installations serve offices, retail spaces, warehouses, healthcare facilities, and educational buildings. These systems are typically more complex, with addressable detectors, cause-and-effect programming, and integration with other building management systems.
The Training Pathway
Most fire alarm training providers offer EAL Level 3 qualifications covering both domestic and commercial systems. The training covers detection technology, system design, installation practices, commissioning procedures, and maintenance requirements.
BAFE Certification
BAFE certification demonstrates competence to local authorities and insurance companies. While not legally required, it significantly enhances credibility and opens doors to larger contracts.
Prerequisites
A solid understanding of electrical principles is essential. Qualified electricians can transition into fire alarm work efficiently, while those without electrical background should complete the Basic Electrical Course first.
