Why are so many workers in the UK changing careers and deciding to learn a trade ?

Over the past few years, there has been a significant rise in the demand and opportunity for skilled trade workers, resulting in a notable increase in the number of individuals leaving their positions to learn a trade. Since the global pandemic, many people have recognized a career in a skilled trade as one that provides limitless development and opportunity, particularly as we transition to a more sustainable way of living and continue to witness growth in the number of buildings, devices, and transportation that rely on electricity. This article will examine the various factors influencing many workers in the UK to switch careers and learn a trade, whilst also exploring some of the rising opportunities and causes of high demand in the electrical field.

So, why are people in the UK switching to the trades industry?

  • No need for a degree, you don’t have to spend years studying

To become a fully qualified electrician and start earning, you do not need to spend years of studying at university or college. For those wanting to change careers, this is probably music to your ears. Short and efficient electrical courses, such as those offered by Learn Trade Skills, are electrical courses which provide you with the fundamental theory and practical training, enabling you to become qualified within months, giving you the opportunity to start earning and gaining real experience within the electrical field and allowing you to progress towards working capacity. Another route to take is the apprenticeship route, which although takes years to complete, enables you to work and earn while you train. If you’re interested in starting your journey in the electrical field, consider taking a basic electrical course.

  • The job role can be challenging and interesting

Working as an electrician, for example, will expose you to new challenges every day, which most people find interesting. Working as an electrician will require you to solve new problems every day and keep you on your toes, as will many other skilled trades. Since many jobs are quite repetitive and leave no room for new challenges and obstacles, such as those involving working in an office all day with repetitive tasks, It is easy to see why many have decided to make the switch.

  • Least likely job to be out of demand

With the demand for skilled trades, particularly electricians, increasing, it is probably the safest and most reliable career to switch to. Many people have expressed concern about the demand for their jobs in recent years, especially during the lockdown era, which saw many people out of work. Since then, many people have decided to change careers in order to feel more secure in their position. Furthermore, we continue to see reports of increasing demand for electricians in the UK due to new builds and a variety of other factors. It is difficult to imagine any electrician being out of work, especially as we transition to a more sustainable way of life and become more reliant on electricity to carry out our daily tasks.

Many training centres also offer part time electrical training courses, enabling you to learn a trade and continue with any other work commitments in the mean time. Ideal for those without any experience and want to jump into the industry as quickly as possible.

  • Pay/ Earnings

Salary/earnings can also be a deciding factor to why many people in the UK are switching career into the trades industry.

Electricians are known to be the highest-paid trade in the United Kingdom, with numerous reports of increases in average salaries over the past couple years due to the rising demand and importance of their job role, especially during the lockdown era.

Electricians in the UK earn between £35,000 and £40,000 on average, with self-employed electricians earning up to £100,000 per year.  Visit the following article if you would like to learn more about electrician earnings https://learntradeskills.co.uk/2021/01/31/electricians-earning/.

  • Highly respected job role in society

The public and society in general tend to show a lot of respect to an electrician as they play a vital role in our everyday lives. An electrician enables us to carry out tasks in our everyday lives and even put themselves at risk when working in hazardous situations to maintain electricity within buildings, whether you’re at home or at work. Therefore, a lot of respect and appreciation is shown to the job role.
